Winners of the 2002 Larry L. Sautter Award

The Sautter Award is offered by the Joint Operations Group (JOG) of UC information technology managers as a memorial to Larry L. Sautter who, from 1987 until his death in 1999, served in Computing and Communications at UC Riverside, first as director and later as associate vice chancellor. Larry Sautter established a culture of innovation and customer service. In the spirit of his contributions to the Riverside campus and the UC computing community, the award recognizes innovators in the deployment of information technology whose work helps user departments do their jobs more effectively and contributes to a climate that welcomes innovative and entrepreneurial use of available resources. Members of JOG hope that recognition of initiative and outstanding work will encourage further innovation in information technology across the University of California.

Best IT Practices in Business Processes and Services
Electronic Educational Environment Web Site (UC Irvine)

UCI’s EEE Web site (http://eee.uci.edu/) is an easy-to use, flexible, and scalable instructional technology toolkit. The site’s core services include Web-based course administration tools, Web-based solutions for increasing student access to course materials and other educational resources, and communication tools for enhancing discussion and providing a means for immediate feedback. EEE resources are available to all UCI faculty, teaching assistants, students, and staff members who support UCI’s instructional technology efforts. Shohreh Bozorgmehri was the team leader and Eric Carter was the lead developer of the project.

Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Information Technology
Webcast Project (UC Berkeley)

UCB’s Webcast Project provides live remote viewing and on-demand replay of courses and special events using streaming audio and video over the Internet. The project was a unique collaboration between a research group led by Professor Lawrence Rowe and central campus service providers to continue an innovative technology service. Marc Wallman of Central Computing Services, Obadiah Greenberg of Educational Technology Services, and Peter Pletcher of the Berkeley Multimedia Research Center worked together to provide this educational resource on an ongoing basis to a worldwide audience of teachers and learners.

Honorable Mention
Physical Plant Computerized Maintenance Management System (UC Riverside)

The Physical Plant Computerized Maintenance Management System is a Web-based system available to the entire campus for obtaining products and services from the centralized Physical Plant department. Customers may submit various requests via the Web, as well as approve estimates, review billing information, and report problems among other actions. The labor management module leverages the campus wireless network, enabling Physical Plant personnel to enter labor hours in real-time from remote work sites using handheld computers with integrated bar code scanners.

Honorable Mention
Retirement Process Project (UC Office of the President)

The Retirement Process Project, led by Bruce James in UCOP Information Resources and Communications and Michael Baptista in UCOP Human Resources and Benefits, combines new processes and a technology-based solution to replace the outdated, paper-based process that relied on manual calculations. The project utilizes Web, client-server, and imaging applications tied together with workflow in order to automate the entire retirement process. Donna Yamasaki was the project manager. Lisa Hart (IS&C) and Esther Cheung (Benefits ISS) were major contributors, along with the Benefits ISS Systems staff.
